Teens face charges following 'brawl' at school

Posted: Updated:

A fight at a high school in Ferndale ends with the arrest of six students and FOX 2 has learned this isn't the first time police have been called to this school because of violence.

Police say the whole thing started early in the day on Wednesday at the Taft Education Center. Around 10:25 a.m. the Ferndale Police Liason Officer learned from the Assistant Principal that he had sent 4 students home because several students were trying to start a fight with another student inside. But after school they came back.

Police say they were looking for 18 year-old Deandre Robinson. FOX 2 spoke with Aaron Jackson who said," 'All you saw was fists and people running everywhere. People were getting slammed, officers were getting knocked over. The principal got pushed and hurt on her head. It was just a brawl." The fight spilled out into the streets and police say some of the students were shouting out gang affiliations. At least 2 are charged with assaulting the officer who tried to break up the fight.

In a statement from Ferndale Public Schools said, "In the afternoon a fight took place outside the school, not inside. The fight began between two students with three more joining in. We continuously work with our staff and police responding to school incidents."

After the fight a Female student was arrested for disturbing the peace. 17-year-old Damian Jones plead Guilty in court on Thursday to assaulting a police officer and disturbing the peace.

The rest plead Not Guilty and will appear in court in November.

Reached by phone the mother of two of the boys involved says she was shocked to hear the charges against her sons and says she doesn't know where she's going to come up with $10-Thousand. She says all she can do now is pray.
