Consumers get help with Call for Action

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

FOX 5's Call for Action volunteers come in every week, and help solve viewer problems. They do it for free, and for the love helping out others.

They just held their annual conference in Atlanta, and we wanted to remind you of their contribution to FOX 5 and to the community.

FOX 5 gets calls every day from people asking for help. We can't help everyone, and that's when the Call for Action team jumps in to help mediate these disputes. They're an all-volunteer group who gets the job done.

"I would tell anybody, if you have a problem, call Call for Action. It works," said one woman.

Amy Short was furious that her new couch was collapsing.  Once she called Call for Action, the retailer decided to talk to her.

"Amazing. All of the sudden people actually talked to me; someone called back.  They wanted to ask more questions about the situation," said Short.

The Call for Action volunteers bring businesses to the table with upset customers to mediate disputes.  Volunteers are in 25 cities nationwide.

"Some of our Call for Actions, so far, this year have gotten back over a million dollars for consumers. That's one office we're talking about," said Call for Action President Shirley Rooker.

Rooker might be president of Call for Action but she's also one of its 1,000 volunteers.  Last week, some of them gathered in Atlanta for an annual meeting to exchange information on trends that have the potential to trip up consumers.

"We're looking now at the way you do mobile payments on your cellphone, almost as your bank, as your checkbook and everything else. What kind of issues does that raises for consumers," said Rooker.

Helping FOX 5 viewers get a bad TV exchanged, or a police record expunged, doesn't happen without the volunteers. They are the engine that makes Call for Action work.

"Don't forget we're kind of the first line of help for some consumers.  There aren't very many government agencies or other places that consumer can go," said Rooker.

FOX 5's Call for Action Director, Susan Bowie, has just been named to the National Call for Action Board of Directors, and our congratulations go out to her.
