South Deering fatal shooting suspect shot by police

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police shot a man suspected of killing one person and wounding another in a shooting Sunday afternoon in the South Deering neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

The suspect allegedly shot two people in the 9800 block of South Merrill Avenue about 12:45 p.m., according to a statement from police News Affairs.

One of the people shot later died from his injuries, authorities said. His name was being withheld as officials notify his family, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A 38-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was being treated for a gunshot wounds to her legs, police said.

Shortly after the shooting, officers with the Chicago Police Department's gang enforcement unit arrived on the scene and received a description of a suspect, according to the police statement.

That description was then broadcasted over police radio, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police union.

A tactical unit from the South Chicago district was traveling to the scene of the shooting through an alley when they saw a man who matched the description, Camden said. Officers tried taking the man into custody in the 2200 block of East 97th Street, but the man resisted and allegedly pulled out a gun, authorities said.

The man fired shots at the officers, who then returned gunfire, the police statement claimed. The suspect was hit and began running until officers took him into custody in the 9600 block of South Chappel Avenue, authorities claim.

No officers were injured, Camden said, and investigators recovered a weapon.

Officials with the city's Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police-involved shootings, were collecting details, said agency spokesman Larry Merritt.

But it was not completely clear whether police shot the man or if he was wounded in the shooting in the 9800 block of South Merrill Avenue, Merritt said.

"At this time, we're presuming that he was struck by police," Merritt said, adding that forensic tests will be conducted to determine who shot the man.

The suspect, believed to be in his mid-30s, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Camden said, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
