WIXOM, Mich. (WJBK) - A district has ordered the doors of some of its schools locked as police continue the search for whoever is responsible for a series of shootings last week in a three-county region of southeastern Michigan.
A task force of local and state police agencies is investigating the 20 reported shootings in Livingston, Oakland, Ingham and Shiawassee counties. Most of the shootings were directed at cars on roads Tuesday through Thursday.
Walled Lake Consolidated Schools officials say students at schools in Wixom are having indoor recess, and schools' doors are locked on Monday. They're not sure how long the precautionary measures will remain in effect.
"Kids should go to school," said Wixom Police Chief Clarence Goodlein, who said his department has coordinated safety schedules at area schools.
Authorities on Sunday released a drawing of a man suspected in the shootings. "This is a very serious matter," said Goodlein. "This is a man with a gun who is indiscriminately shooting at cars."
Tipsters tell police he appears to be a white man in his 30s. A witness also says the suspect's vehicle looked like a dark colored 1998 Oldsmobile Alero or a 1998 Toyota Camry. Investigators have hesitated to call the suspect a "sniper."
"We're going to find this person. It's just (a matter) of time," said Goodlein.
