US Attorney announces post to combat voter fraud

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The U.S. Attorney for Arizona says he has appointed a prosecutor to oversee complaints of fraud and voting rights abuses for the Nov. 6 general elections.

John S. Leonardo says Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic Lanza will head up his office's efforts in partnership with the Justice Department's national Election Day Program.

Leonardo says voters should have confidence in the system and their rights should be carefully protected. He says federal prosecutors will pursue cases of election fraud and abuse aggressively.

Authorities will be looking for any cases of intimidation or voters being bribed, the altering of vote tallies and stuffing of ballot boxes, among other things.

Leonardo says the FBI also will be handling allegations of election fraud or abuse nationwide.
