Canoe capsizes near Ft. Snelling, one dies

One man fishing on Lake Fort Snelling drowned Friday morning after his canoe capsized.

Another man, who was also in the canoe, was able to swim to shore, but the man who later died remained in the water for some time.

Hennepin County sheriff's deputies, along with Minneapolis Airport police and firefighters, rushed to the lake and rescued the second man from the water.

Both men were taken to United Hospital in St. Paul. The man who was able to swim to shore was treated and released, but the rescued canoeist arrived in critical condition and later died.

The victim was from Richfield.
