ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

The NHL announced Thursday it has canceled games for the 2012 season through Oct. 24. That adds up to 82 games total, including five Minnesota Wild games.

NHL STATEMENT

The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through October 24. A total of 82 regular-season games were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct. 24.

The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

WHAT ABOUT THE WILD?

The Wild ticket office has offered to pay its season ticket holders interest as an incentive to keep money in their accounts during the NHL lockout. Once a deal is reached and the lockout is lifted, the Wild will credit season ticket holders for any missed games, plus 10 percent interest on the dollar value of tickets for those games. That credit can be applied toward future games, playoffs or season ticket renewals.

Wild fans are counting on a quick resolution to the NHL lockout, with enthusiasm at its peak in the State of Hockey after the major acquisitions of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in free agency.

The Wild's first home game is now scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 against the Florida Panthers. The team's first game under the trimmed schedule will be Oct. 26 in Columbus ( 6 p.m. FSN) unless the NHL cancels more games.

THE STATE OF HOCKEY

While the NHL and its players now agree on what qualifies as hockey-related revenue, they still haven't figured out how to split the $3.3 billion the sport generates.

This is the second NHL lockout in eight years. The last one canceled the entire 2004-05 season.
