ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A St. Paul man has rejected a plea deal in the death of a 16-year-old girl who was struck and killed outside Harding High School.

Carlos Viveros-Colorado also waived his right to a jury trial Wednesday. He will be tried before a judge Nov. 5.

Viveros-Colorado is accused of hitting and killing Clarisse Grime, of St. Paul, with an SUV while she was waiting for the school bus on July 5. He faces a charge of criminal vehicular homicide in her death.

Viveros-Colorado also is charged with criminal vehicular operation, a gross misdemeanor, for injuring Grime's boyfriend, who suffered a bruised hip.

The Star Tribune reported the plea deal would have given Viveros-Colorado a lower sentence for the most serious charge.

Viveros-Colorado's attorney told the judge he believes prosecutors were pressuring his client to take a guilty plea, even though he had a legitimate defense.

Witnesses told FOX 9 News the 16-year-old tenth-grader had been sitting in the shade with her boyfriend by the school sign away from the road when the vehicle careened into her.

Investigators reported that Viveros-Colorado apparently missed a corner while trying to turn from 3rd Street onto Hazelwood Street. His vehicle jumped a curb, struck a fire hydrant, crossed the intersection, struck a sign and continued 50 feet down an embankment before hitting Grime.

Officials say he was speeding at the time of the crash, and neighbors told FOX 9 News they feared a crash like this would happen one day since speeding is common in the area.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
