L. Brooks Patterson still running for re-election

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

"I hate to disappoint him, but rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated. I'm in good shape, I'm getting better, and I'll be back to work on a full time basis shortly."  Those are the words of Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson heard on the radio last week. He was addressing doubts of whether he could still handle his job.

These doubts arise after the 74-year-old suffered broken bones and a gash on his head after a car accident. He was cited for not wearing a seat belt.

He has since admitted that was a mistake, and has given word that his opponents should be on notice because he's still running for re-election.

Democrat Kevin Howley wants three debates. But that does not seem likely. The Deputy County Executive issued a statement saying, "Brooks' opponent hasn't earned any debates. Brooks has a 20 year body of work to speak for him. In the last election, the Oakland County Dems. resorted to criminal felonies in an attempt to win. This year they spread rumors and lies to mislead and try to take advantage of Brooks' victimization. Tell them no."

Howley responds, "I don't know how he gets to determine who has the rights to represent the people and the issues of the county." Howley just wants to talk about the issues.

Patterson was moved to a rehab facility to begin intense physical therapy. He hopes to be back at his desk in 2-4 weeks.
