DNR: Lawn mowers, mufflers start fires in northwestern Minn.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The state Department of Natural Resources says there's an extreme fire danger in northwestern Minnesota.

Warroad Area forest supervisor Adam Munstenteiger says it is so dry that even hot vehicle mufflers and lawn mowers are sparking fires. They have extra firefighting equipment on standby just in case.

He says they've had about 210 fires this year so far and the arrival of fall increases the fire risk.

Across 22 northwest Minnesota counties, campfires are allowed only at state parks, resorts or private homes.

Munstenteiger told Minnesota Public Radio it will take several inches of rain or snow to ease the fire danger.
