The Minnesota Zoo is celebrating the 29th birthday of Nikko the snow monkey -- the oldest living snow monkey in North America.
Born in September of 1983, Nikko has survived almost twice as long as a typical male snow monkey -- something the Minnesota Zoo credits to his personality.
"He's been a great animal to have in the troop," said tropics trail supervisor Tom Ness. "As one of the dominant males, he has always been laid back, helping to maintain peace within the troop which is not typical of male macaques."
Just three other living snow monkeys in the world are older than him: two in the Czech Republic (age 32) and one Rome (age 31). Of all male macaques, living and deceased, there have been only seven older than Nikko.
What did Nikko get for his birthday gift? A few extra snacks.
