A man's body was discovered strewn amongst the trash at a waste transfer station in Monroe.
Two workers discovered the fully-clothed body at the station off Cherry Hill Road on Tuesday morning. It had no identification. The body is believed to be of a white man in his 30s.
"Some workers saw an arm in one of the containers," said Monroe Police Cmdr. William Sam Treadwell.
Monroe police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are working to determine the man's identify and find out who dumped his body in the trash.
Treadwell said that it appeared that the man had placed in the trash within the last couple of days because his body had not yet begun decomposing.
The body was taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
"We saw possibly, looks like a gunshot wound to the chest. We really don't know," said Treadwell.
Police are going over the records of the transfer station to try to pinpoint where the man was placed in the trash.
Monroe police are hoping the GBI will help them identify the victim through his fingerprints.
Police hope someone gives them a call about the man discovered in the trash.
"It's pretty gruesome, you know, to have no respect for a body. Somebody that's already passed away and then you're going to throw the body away like a piece of trash," said Treadwell.
Treadwell says Monroe police have already checked with a number of metro Atlanta police agencies to try to track down who the victim might be.
