These are some of my favorite clouds. No, they are not "special effects" from the latest Spielberg movie, and no, they are not real U.F.O.'s - although they are often mistaken for them!
These are Altocumulus Standing Lenticularis Clouds, better known simply as "Lenticular Clouds", or sometimes called standing wave clouds.
They are formed over mountain tops, or often times on the "Lee" or downwind side of mountain ranges. Glider (or sailplane) pilots can use these clouds to stay aloft for hours. Skilled pilots can even use the "standing wave" (or ripple) formed off of these mountains to travel hundreds of miles!
They are a common sight along the front range of the Rockies. But since we don't have any mountains here in Chicago, not so much here!

While man made global warming may be still a topic for hot debate, it's hard to argue, that whatever the cause, there is change transpiring in our atmosphere and environment.
