Stephen Chbosky's award winning book "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" was originally published in 1999. Movie offers came immediately, but the author explained why he held out until the time was right.
"It did well right off the bat, and then I had some studios offer me like a good six figures kind of thing and I was broke," he said. "What made this right for me at the end of the day, I was waiting to be ready to get enough distance to do a proper adaptation. That was really important to me. I didn't want to just film a book. I had to make it a movie."
"You don't sell babies," he added.
Chbosky, a Pittsburgh native who also wrote and directed the film, told us that he loves Michigan and has friends throughout the state.
The movie stars Ezra Miller and 22-year-old Harry Potter star Emma Watson as the girl of his affection.
