Many of Detroit's men and women in blue are seeing red after a judge cleared the way for them to work 12-hours shifts Tuesday. It's just the latest setback in the police union's legal fight with the cash-strapped city.
"How much can they take? And I'm telling you right now the line is getting close, very close to breaking. Very close to breaking," said Detroit Police Officers Association President Joe Duncan.
Officers are now working 12-hour shifts and have been forced to take cuts to pay and benefits. They say Detroit is now the lowest paid police department in the country in a city becoming seemingly more dangerous by the minute.
"Officers are leaving. Five have left since this court's order. Public safety is compromised. Blood is being shed in the city's streets. Since this court's order, 32 people have been murdered," said DPOA attorney Danoto Iorio.
The DPOA was in court Tuesday seeking an injunction until they can appeal recently imposed changes to police work rules. They could've appealed ten days ago, but the judge couldn't find the paperwork.
"For the last ten days, the order's been lost in space according to her. That's what she said. It's e-filed, so she can't find it... and then all of a sudden the clerk said, oh, wow, I have it right here," Duncan said.
For now, all department changes will remain in effect, something police say will affect you.
"If you're a citizen of Detroit, if you're a visitor of Detroit, and if you work in Detroit, you're safety depends on us," said Duncan.
He also said the cards may be stacked against them, but police won't give up.
"You can only push a person so far before they start to push back," Duncan remarked. "The bottom line is we're going to get justice. Either we get it legally or we get it, but we're going to get justice."
