Haunted house burns down at Buck Hill before opening

Posted: Updated:

Organizers say fans of fright won't have to wait to visit the state's premier haunted house after it caught fire this weekend and burned to the ground at Buck Hill.

Crews say "Frightmares" was in the process of being set up when the fire broke out and destroyed the Bellharm-Lovejoy Asylum.

Despite the loss, the general manager of Buck Hill says the haunted house will still open its fourth season on Oct. 5 as planned after crews clear up the fire debris.

Kari Simonson sent pictures of the fire to FOX 9 News, and flames can be seen shooting through the roof.

Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann said the fire broke out at about 1 a.m. inside a large tent with temporary walls. No one was inside at the time.

Crews from Lakeville helped extinguish the flames, and investigators spent several hours looking for a cause.

On Sunday afternoon, organizers issued the following statement about the fire:

As you may have heard, there was a fire involving one of the attractions at Frightmares at Buck Hill, Minnesota's premier haunted attraction, last night. The fire destroyed the Bellharm-Lovejoy Asylum, one of four houses and many other attractions at Frightmares at Buck Hill. No one was injured in the fire.

Frightmares at Buck Hill General Manager Don McClure confirmed that Frightmares at Buck Hill is still fully operational and will open for its fourth season on Friday, October 5 for 13 nights.

Frightmares at Buck Hill's other primary attractions --- Orchard Manor Dead and Breakfast; The Fright Factory; and the Haunted Hallow --- as well as the regular features such as live musical entertainment and Kevin Hall's Magic Show, will open and entertain guests as scheduled. As soon as the scene of the fire is cleared, a new attraction will be put in its place.

On a similar note, Frightmares at Buck Hill, will be hosting a Job Fair for the 2012 Frightmares season on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 7 p.m. Open Positions include Lead Roles (acting or improv experience preferred), Supporting Roles (some acting experience preferred), 30 to 40 Scaracter roles (no acting experience required); and six Puppet Masters (must be strong enough to wear and operate 25 lb. body puppet).
