Garbage collection delays anger Detroit residents

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (MyFox Detroit) -

Garbage mix-ups are leading to confusion and anger in several Detroit neighborhoods.

FOX 2 cameras have spotted trucks picking up trash as late at 11 p.m. during the week. "Trash is sitting out here smelling on the street," said Virginia Williams, who has witnessed her trash being picked up as late as 11:30 p.m.

Mayor Dave Bing's office says mechanical issues are forcing trucks out of service. Repairs aren't being done fast enough to keep up with demand.

Many of the city's trash collectors are now working afternoon shifts to catch up on all the pickups and cut down on overtime.

A spokesperson for the mayor says normal garbage pickup schedules should resume soon.
