HASTINGS, Minn. (KMSP) -
A portion of the Mississippi River is closed Friday, which is moving day for a massive piece of the new Highway 61 Bridge in Hastings.
The already-built span is being moved from dry land onto barges, weather permitting. The river closure will last for half of the weekend.
"It's a very large structure going into the river," explained Kirsten Klein, MnDOT spokeswoman. "That's like, 6.5 million pounds from shore to barges, and we want to keep people safe."
The new Highway 61 Bridge is the longest tied-arch bridge with a free-standing rib in the Western Hemisphere.
