Most Minnesota students will be heading back to school on Tuesday, and that meant a lot of stores were swarmed with last-minute shoppers on Labor Day.
Many procrastinating parents spent at least part of the holiday picking up protractors and pencils, while others who forgot an item or two rushed to make sure their kids would have fully-stocked book bags for the new school year.
The National Retail Federation says the average parent will spend $688 on school supplies this year, which is up about $85 from last year.
Despite low consumer confidence, some stores are cashing in on the school shopping season. The Limited said store sales went up 8 percent last month, and Costco's sales jumped 6 percent. Both companies beat their projected expectations.
