There is an old saying that ugly is beautiful. For the Gophers 30-27 overtime win over UNLV no statement could define the game better.
Despite out gaining the Rebels 478-275, the Gophers could only muster 13 points, six coming in come from behind fashion. Minnesota took the lead with 5:40 left in the game when Jordan Wettstein nailed a 21 yard field goal to take a 13-10 lead. UNLV drove the field and tied the game with 2:46 left sending the contest into overtime.
MarQueis Gray threw two touchdowns in overtime to John Rabe and finished 17 of 30 for 269 yards.
A.J. Barker led receivers with 3 catches for 101 yards. Donnell Kirkwood paced the ground attack with 13 carries for 81 yards.
The win was the first overtime game since a 2009 win over Syracuse.
With the win, the Gophers begin the 2012 season 1-0 and will face New Hampshire at TCF Bank Stadium next Saturday morning with a 11 a.m. kickoff.
