The MTA is set to remove trash cans from eight more stations after getting "positive results" at two stations in a pilot program.

The agency said the program is designed to reduce the number of trash bags from stations and help control the rat population in stations. The agency said it was monitoring the frequency of track fires and the overall cleanliness at the stations lacking cans.

Riders are expected to carry their trash with them out of the subway system.

In fall 2011, the MTA removed cans from the 8th Street R station and the Flushing-Main Street 7 station. Crews hauled away 67 percent fewer bags of trash at Main Street and 50 percent less trash at 8th Street, the MTA said. The agency said cleanliness improves and track fires did not increase.

Beginning September 2, 2012, the following stations will be free of trash cans:

Bronx

  • 238th Street 2 station
  • East 143rd Street 6 station

Manhattan

  • 57th Street F station
  • Rector Street 1 station

Brooklyn

  • 7th Avenue F/G station
  • Brighton Beach B/Q station

Queens

  • 111th Street A station
