Oak Park Heights signs off on St. Croix River Bridge

Posted: Updated:
OAK PARK HEIGHTS, Minn. -

A project that's been years in the making has been given the final green light it needs now that the Oak Park Heights City Council has approved the plan to build a $676 million bridge over the St. Croix River -- but only after the deal was sweetened by Gov. Mark Dayton.

The city had been hesitant to give the go-ahead because the city's aging sewer system would need repairs that residents felt were being forced on them faster than they would have been without the bridge project.

To help ease those concerns, Dayton promised the would try to get $1.5 million in either federal or state money to help them pay for the extra costs.

In the end, the City Council seemed satisfied with that proposal and gave their approval, thus removing the final hurdle for MnDOT.
