The left engine of a United Airlines flight caught fire forcing the plane to make an emergency landing at Newark Airport shortly after takeoff Saturday night.

Authorities said the Boeing 757, en route to Berlin, Germany with 173 passengers on board, was forced to circle over New Jersey for more than an hour and a half to burn off fuel after the fire was extinguished and the plane was stabilized.

United Flight 96 departed Newark around 5:50 p.m. and was able to land without incident around 8:10 p.m., according to United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"United Flight 96, operating between Newark and Berlin, returned to Newark this afternoon after the Boeing 757 experienced a mechanical issue with an engine. The crew followed standard procedures in returning to Newark, where the airplane landed safely. Meanwhile, we are working to re-accommodate the customers to their final destinations," United Airlines said in a statement.

The FAA said it didn't know what caused the engine fire yet and was continuing the investigation.

The Port Authority says dozens of departing and arriving flights at Newark Airport were delayed as a result of the emergency landing.
