Police say a livery cab passenger was shot in the head after a man attempted to rob the driver in Brooklyn early Saturday morning.

The incident happened when the livery cab stopped at a red light on Utica Avenue and Avenue M, in the Flatlands section around 2:30 a.m. when a man approached the vehicle demanding money.

The cab driver refused and the suspect reached into the cab attempting to grab the money, and a struggle ensued. According to police, during the struggle, the suspect's gun went off.

Police don't know if the suspect fired the gun intentionally or accidentally.

The 23-year-old male passenger, who was in the back seat, was shot in the head. Police say a female passenger was also sitting in the back seat but was not injured.

The unidentified shooting victim was taken to Kings County Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Police say they have a person in custody and are questioning him.
