Labor unions to rally outside Meadowlands mall

Posted: Updated:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's AFL-CIO chapter plans to hold a rally Saturday aimed at jumpstarting the Meadowlands mall project.

Gov. Chris Christie has called it the ugliest building in New Jersey.

Financial problems halted work in 2009 on the original retail and entertainment complex that was named Xanadu.

Plans were announced last year to build the American Dream complex, which would eventually be the largest mall in the world.

The project needs final approval from the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.

The football Giants and Jets have raised concerns about parking and traffic problems that the megamall could generate on game days at nearby MetLife Stadium.

The teams filed a lawsuit. But a judge last week ruled the suit was premature.

The unions say the project would create construction jobs.
