Bob Sirott's One More Thing about the Olympic closing ceremonies

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing, about the Olympic closing ceremonies. They're a lot more informal than the opening spectacular.

When you see the athletes in their outfits partying in the crowd, they don't look as old as they do when they're competing.  They really look like the young kids they are.

The show last night was a festival of British bands, familiar and unfamiliar; new and old. The gold medal for most aggravating Olympic broadcast decision NBC made occurred last night when they premiered their new show ‘Animal Practice' instead of getting to The Who's performance. Good thing the 80,000 fans at the stadium didn't have to watch monkeys in scrubs and local news for an hour before the concert resumed.

And when the mayor of Rio de Janeiro accepted the Olympic flag for the 2016 host city, I was thinking how it could have been Rahm Emanuel up there had Chicago won the bid.

If we got the games, I don't think Mayor Emanuel would have let himself get stuck on a zipline the way London's mayor, Boris Johnson did.

It's nice that the United States won the most medals and the most gold. It's fun to have pride in your country and root for what truly is our home team.

When you think about it, the local baseball, football, basketball, and hockey teams we root for are, for the most part, made up of athletes who aren't from Chicago and don't live here.

We cheer for the Chicago uniform, the logo, and the tradition. During the Olympics we really are cheering for us--for who we are now.
