MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis Parks employees found a dead cat with a political lawn sign attached to it in the south end of Longfellow Park just after dawn on Monday morning.

Both the FBI and the Secret Service are now involved in the case -- and given the disturbing details of the gruesome display, they say they plan to monitor the case and take action if needed.

The crime is undoubtedly cruel, and the details are more than a little unsettling for many -- especially those who live in the area.

Police told FOX 9 News that the cat's burned body was found staked to a tree stump with a small American flag next to an Obama-Biden 2012 lawn sign. The cat's throat was slashed by the stake that stabbed its neck, holding its corpse to the flat surface of the stump. The small flag was left to stick out of the gash.

The police report is sealed and has been redacted, and the case is being treated as a Homeland Security offense.

Whether it was political or a prank taken way too far remains unclear; however, neighbors in the area were certainly shocked to see their idyllic park play host to such senseless violence.

Dana Becker, who was out flying a kite with his kids, said he sees the incident as an example of what inflammatory political discourse can do to fragile minds.

"People are taking it more and more personal," he said. "They take their political view as who they are."
