ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -
Wolf hunting opponents gathered at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Thursday morning to rally and present a petition to stop the inaugural wolf hunt.
The DNR has set a Nov. 3 wolf hunting opener, with a cap of 400 wolves that can be killed in the season. Hunting was opened after the federal government took gray wolves off the endangered list in January.
Opponents of the hunt with Howling for Wolves say the DNR has opened wolf hunting too quickly, arguing that the state's estimated wolf population of 3,000 is still vulnerable.
The group sent an information request to the DNR last month seeking more information about why and how the wolves went from the endangered species list to the calendar of hunting season.
If they can't stop the season, Howling for Wolves at least wants the DNR to delay the start.
