"My sister is now deceased. She's no longer with us. Jamari, however, I guess is living his life," Candace Tatume said back in April when we brought you a story about justifiable homicide in Detroit.
In that story, we asked in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida that was originally ruled a justifiable homicide how many similar cases existed in Detroit. After all, in the entire state of Florida, they record about 40 cases of justifiable homicide a year.
In Detroit last year, it was 35.
"He shot her, so as she was running back to the car, I guess he shot her again, and that's when she put out her knife to protect herself," Tatume explained.
Last winter, Jamari Jackson was bickering with the mother of his child. Her name was Chardre Tatume. Things turned ugly. In the end, he allegedly suffered a knife wound to the belly. She laid dead from a gunshot wound.
Originally her death was ruled a justifiable homicide until our story aired, and then a new witness stepped forward and the case was reopened.
Wednesday, Jackson was charged with homicide, manslaughter and felony firearm possession. He plead not guilty claiming self defense. Even so, the magistrate slapped him with a $250,000 cash bond.
It's just one case, but it means everything to one family.
On a side note, Jackson tried to turn himself in Monday to the police, but they turned him away because he didn't have picture I.D.
