New research published in the Archives ofInternal Medicine shows that some common medications used for high blood pressure are associated with an increased risk of lip cancer. The medications (and the brand names) studied include:
- Hydrocholorothiazide (Hydrodiuril)
- Hydrochlorothiazide/triamterene (Dyazide,Maxzide)
- Lisinopril (Zestril, Prinivil)
- Nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia)
These medications are well-known to make people more sensitive to the sun which increases the risk of sunburn, and, subsequently, skin cancer. While this study specifically looked at rates of lip cancer study, there may be a broader issue with these medications increasing the risk of skin cancer on other parts of the body.
