Bears Bourbonnais Diary Day 9

Posted: Updated:
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

With one week before the first pre-season game against Denver, questions began to be asked about the offensive line. Well, they've been asked all along, just today they were louder. And with good reason.

Two days ago, Coach Mike Tice made it clear the Webb/Williams rotation was daily. Yet again this afternoon, J'Marcus covered LT while the rotation went to RT between Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi. Chatted with Williams before lunch and he said, he's just trying to get better. He just goes where they tell him and does his job. But he openly said "I feel comfortable starting." When asked further if he sees himself starting this season, he gave one word. "Yeah."

We then chatted with Carimi. He sat out a bit of practice on Wednesday but said it's just because he's shaking off the rust. You can tell. Not to downplay what he's been through. Repairing a dislocated knee-cap is intense - one major surgery, two minor procedures and 10 months later he's finally back on a football field. He's never missed that much time. And while he said he feels like he understands the offense, he knows what Tice is looking for, he does feel like a rookie again because he's back out there trying to prove he should again be a starter. Lovie said his ability to keep up is the biggest issue. He's got to physically handle it. For a guy called the "key" to the O-Line this season, he better be able to.

The Nation (J-Webb, that is) didn't talk to us directly today - he kind of ran off to sign autographs for some young kids. Totally cool, but really wanted to know if he feels like a starter. If he feels like he's farther ahead now than a year ago. Lovie said they like what he's doing, but then he said we like what all our tackles are doing. So clearly non-committal. But when they asked him how quickly he'd like that front five solidified, he said as soon as possible. It's paramount for that unit to gel before the regular season starts. The explosiveness of this armed and ready offense depends on it.

Quick Observations: Urlacher did not practice again today. His knee heavily wrapped with ice on and off. Devin Hester was given the day off - sounded like personal reasons. Consequently Alshon Jeffery spent time with the first team and looked good. Really good. Highlights of the day were a one handed grab by Marshall. And interceptions from both Lance Briggs and Shea McClellin. Everyone was happy for the rookie. He needed a boost in confidence.

Just Because: The fish at lunch today was Monk. Absolutely delish. But I am told if I actually see a picture of a Monk Fish it will be the last one I eat. I am avoiding Google. And I tried really hard to avoid finding out today's Olympic results - especially gymnastics. Epic failure. Couldn't avoid Twitter. And if anyone is actually reading this - other than my executive producer - I'm off until next Wednesday. I'll be back just in time for Broncos vs Bears Aug. 9 on FOX!
