Residents of Brightmoor ready for a TechTown turnaround

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Turning a great idea into a business definitely isn't easy. But it can be done. And business incubator Techtown is coming to Brightmoor to help entrepreneurs tap into success.

Alicia Marion's dream is now a reality. Welcome to the Motor City Java House and no, it's not in Midtown or Downtown, this is Brightmoor. And if you dig a little deeper you'll see there's something brewing in  this community and it's not just inside the Java House.

Kirk Mayes is the executive director of Brightmoor Alliance. Since 2006 the midtown business incubator has helped more than 600 Detroit businesses tap into millions of dollars of capital while creating jobs.

And for the first time ever Techtown is branching out and bringing their expertise and resources to Brightmoor. Techtown is opening an office at the Old Redford community building. It'll be open every Tuesday and will offer business coaching and much more. And the timing couldn't be better.

Positive things are happening like the expansion of the Motor City Blight Buster's Farm City Detroit. It's a project that people all over Metro Detroit are getting involved in. Detroit's first Meijer supermarket is also set to open next year and the store could draw plenty of traffic through Brightmoore, creating jobs and opportunity.

Residents we talked with say they're ready to see a turnaround that will hopefully make Brightmoor a shopping destination while giving the surrounding neighborhood a much needed boost.
