Posted: Updated:
LAKE MINNETONKA, Minn. (KMSP) -

In the past week, there have been at least 16 thefts from docked boats at Lake Minnetonka, and police are hoping tips from the public will lead them to the culprits.

Investigators say the thefts have taken place at marinas and private residences. The stolen items range from alcohol and tools to electronics like radios and televisions.

Between July 24 and July 28, thefts were reported in the following areas:

  • Mound
  • Orono -- Brown's Bay
  • Orono -- Smith Bay
  • Spring Park
  • Tonka Bay

A citizen captured video footage of two young men who were interrupted during a theft onboard a boat on Lake Minnetonka. That full video can be viewed on YouTube.

Anyone who recognizes the two seen in the video footage or who has information about the crimes is urged to call either the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office at 763-525-6216 or 911.

Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers of Minnesota by calling 1-800-222-5477. They can also be submitted online or sent from a cellular phone by texting "Tip674" along with your tip to 274637.

Police recommend boat owners take the following precautions to deter thieves and protect personal property:

  • Remove all electronics, alcohol, and valuable items from your boat
  • Use security lights – especially motion-sensor lights -- on docks
  • Consider installing alarms that sound when entry is made
  • Create a neighborhood watch to report any suspicious activity
  • Don't leave a boat engine key in the ignition
  • Secure hatches and lockers with strong padlocks
  • Secure the outboard motor so it can't be easily removed
  • For trailers, use a wheel lock device or chain a trailer to another object
