Idaho billboard pictures Obama, accused Colo. theater gunman

Posted: Updated:

A new billboard out of Idaho is generating controversy by picturing President Barack Obama next to James Holmes, the man accused of gunning down 12 people in a Colorado movie theater.

The billboard, which shows side-by-side images with captions comparing the number of deaths attributed to both, is an attempt to compare society's reactions, according to the group behind the sign.

The caption for Holmes reads, "Kills 12 in a movie theater with assault rifle, everyone freaks out."

The caption for Obama says, "Kills thousands with his foreign policy, wins a Nobel Peace Prize."

Since it was put up, there have been a lot of strong reactions to the billboard -- especially from those who live nearby. Some have expressed outrage, calling the billboard "repulsive," "disgusting," and offensive to the victims and those affected by the shooting in Aurora, Colo.

Maurice Clements, a member and spokesman for the libertarian group behind the billboard -- the Ralph Smeed Foundation, said the billboard isn't trying to connect Obama with Holmes. Instead, he said it's an attempt to compare society's reactions.
