City pushing hospitals to hide baby formula

Starting Sept. 3, New York City will start keeping tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use in order to encourage more breast feeding, reports the NY Post.

Latch On NYC, the Health Department's initiative, calls for keeping infant formula in secure storage rooms or in locked boxes.

Some of the city's hospitals already follow the 'formula lockdown,' reports the Post. New mothers who want the formula won't be denied it.

Health experts say breast feeding a baby in the first few weeks of life helps develop the digestive system and protect both the child and mother's immune systems.

Supporters of breast feeding believe mother's milk offers essential nutrients that cannot be replicated in formula.

The breast feeding rate has reportedly surged from 39 to 68 percent under the program.

"If you're putting the formula under lock and key it's promoting that sense that yes, you're (mothers unable to breast feed) not the ideal," said child psychologist Dr. Nava Silton.
