Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) is being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Jackson had initially been treated for what is described by staff as a "mood disorder" in Tucson, Ariz.
Jackson flew to Minnesota on a private plane Wednesday night, accompanied by his wife.
"Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has arrived at Mayo Clinic for extensive inpatient evaluation for
depression and gastrointestinal issues," the congressman's office said in a statement. "Further information will be
released as Congressman Jackson's evaluation proceeds. Congressman
Jackson and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers
that have been received throughout his care."
Opponents said it's time for Jackson to consider whether it's good for the district to have a representative who is AWOL.
"I think it's time that Jackson and the family should start considering what's best for the District and whether he should step down and resign the position," said Brian Woodworth, the Republican candidate.
Independent Marcus Lewis wondered if Jackson should even bother.
"Let him get the rest and the care that he needs, because the constitutents have had it. And on Nov. 6, 2012, the people of the Second Congressional District are going to properly dismiss him," Lewis said.
