MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A power outage affected about one-third of downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday after an underground electric vault caught fire.

Xcel Energy said a cable failure caused the fire around 9:10 a.m. Power was cut in order to maintain public and employee safety so crews could assess the damage and identify necessary repairs.

The outage covered about one-third of downtown Minneapolis customers until approximately 10:45 a.m. The affected customers were in an area roughly bounded by 3rd Street North and 8th Street North, and 2nd Avenue North and Nicollet Avenue.

Xcel said some buildings may remain without power Tuesday until building managers reset their individual electrical systems.

Xcel Energy customers who experience an outage should report it at 1-800-895-1999.
