Local politicians call for tighter gun control

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

Police say the Colorado movie theater massacre suspect used an automatic rifle that jammed during the shooting, forcing him to switch to another gun.

That small amount of time may have saved some lives.

The question that is now being asked is – how did James Holmes get all of these guns?

Anytime these mass shootings occur, the debate over gun control heats up again.

Politicians from across the country, including two prominent ones from New York, went on the Sunday morning talks shows and showed us, even at this time, how divisive that debate can be.

The federal ban on assault weapons expired back in 2004, but here in New York, there is a state law that puts limits on them.

Last year, New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg proposed legislation that would limit high-capacity magazines.

The legislation stalled in Congress and Lautenberg said over the weekend he plans to reintroduce it after this latest shooting.
