Hydrating foods to beat the heat

Everyday, and not just during the extreme heat, your body needs water to function. If you're not big on drinking H20, how about eating it?

Slice them or dice them - how ever you eat them - cucumbers top the list of hydrating foods. Made of mostly water, they also contain vitamin C and and an acid that's good for the skin.

If you throw those cukes on top of your salad, you'll be quenching your thirst in a couple of ways. Most lettuce is 90 percent water. Crunchy greens are also full of fiber, which will fill you up.

Rounding out our green threesome -celery. The veggie that gets no respect for its lack of flavor, but this stringy veggie is almost all water!  And it gives you a good dose of mineral salts, vitamins and amino acids.

Guess what's good about a little pasta on a hot day? Store bought tomato sauces are usually about 90 percent water and low in fat and calories! Plus in studies, the lycopene in tomato sauce has shown to protect the skin and soothe it when it comes to sun exposure.

Rounding out our list  - watermelon. It is so delicious and so hydrating. Yes it's filled with water, but also has hydrating salts, calcium, magnesium potassium and sodium. Really the perfect food on a hot summer day!

Also, when you make oatmeal, the oats soak up the water or milk that you use to cook it, so a bowl of oatmeal could end up having more water than cucumbers or oranges.
