Detroit's top attorney speaks out under scrutiny

Posted: Updated:

Detroit's top attorney is speaking out amid scrutiny for challenging the consent agreement in court.

Krystal Crittendon has certainly dealt with a lot over the past few weeks. Detroit's corporation counsel has been the target of nasty headlines. She was even asked to resign for doing what she says is her job. She filed a lawsuit against the state after she was asked to look into whether the consent agreement violated the charter. She argued that the state owed the city millions of dollars which would make the agreement invalid, but an Ingham County judge squashed the lawsuit and her request for him to reconsider it.

Crittendon won't have to file an appeal because there are a number of almost identical lawsuits working their way through the courts. So at some point, a judge will have to issue a ruling without the city formally getting involved. That would eliminate the controversy and the heat. But now the coalition of unions is asking her to look into whether the city's violating the charter by eliminating their contracts.
