MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

When a St. Paul boy fell from his bike, he went down all of three or four feet. But that was enough to seriously injure him. He spent three days in the hospital and may need therapy for the next year. His medical bills so far are 35 thousand dollars and counting. Bike helmets work and can reduce the risk of brain injury by 88%. Consumers have a lot of choices and prices of those helmets run a wide range. How do you know what to buy? Watch Jeff Baillon's story.

The Minnesota Safety Council has a wide variety of bike helmets available on its web site for $12.99 http://www.minnesotasafetycouncil.org/home.cfm

North Memorial hospital in Robbinsdale sells Bell bike helmets in its Health and Care Shop (located on the 1st floor of the hospital).

The helmets are deeply discounted from their retail prices and run between $14 - $19.
