A 4th of July boat outing turned tragic around 10 p.m. Wednesday when a boat-full of people was struck by another boat. That boat then immediately fled the scene.
The accident happened on Big Cormorant Lake in Southwest Becker County.
The Sheriff's office says a boat carrying three adults and two children was trolling on the lake when it was struck by a speeding boat. Witnesses say the driver of that boat never stopped.
Terry Lee Erickson, 39, of West Fargo was on the boat that was struck. Authorities say he suffered significant injuries and was taken to a Minneapolis hospital. Erickson's 4-year-old daughter was also injured in the accident and suffered minor injuries.
The 17-foot Bayliner had its lights on when it was hit.
Police tried tracking down the suspected boat but were unable to find it on the lake.
Authorities say it was difficult to get a good description of the boat from witnesses because it was dark when the accident occurred. The Sheriff's Office says the boat they're looking for was likely larger (18-20ft) in size and either white or cream colored. The vessel possibly has a cabin-style helm and a dark stripe along its side. There is likely damage to the bow and the boat's front.
