BEMIDJI, Minn. (KMSP) -
Storms knocked down thousands of trees in the Bemidji area Monday night into Tuesday.
Emergency managers in Beltrami County said the storm also caused extensive damage to power lines. Thousands of customers are without power in Bemidji and surrounding communities.
The sheriff's office is encouraging people to stay off the roads, which are covered in debris, fallen trees and tangled power lines. While most major roads have been cleared, damaged stoplights have left some intersections uncontrolled in Bemidji early Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service said there were no reports of tornadic activity near Bemidji.
In Itasca County, a fisherman was killed when high winds capsized his boat on Swan Lake. The body of 49-year-old Roy Jasper Flug was recovered from the lake Tuesday. A second man in the boat was able to swim to shore.
