BLAINE, Minn. (KMSP) -
A police chase in the north metro ended with a car crashing into a house in Blaine, killing the driver.
The chase started around 2:30 a.m. Friday when someone called police to report a suspicious SUV in the neighborhood. When officers tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped off.
The SUV only went a few blocks before crashing into a house, killing the 31-year-old driver.
The crash ruptured a gas meter at the home, causing a leak but no fire. A couple sleeping upstairs had to escape through a window because the crashed SUV was blocking the staircase.
The homeowners said they could hear the crash and feel the impact. Moments later, they heard police yelling for them to get out, and could also hear the hissing from the broken gas line.
"I was in shock," said homeowner Jeff Salmi. "I thought it was a bad dream or a nightmare."
