Demo underway on old Mackenzie High School

Posted: Updated:

Crews began the demolition Thursday of shuttered Detroit Mackenzie High School.

Detroit Public Schools officials say it should take about 16 weeks to tear down the 223,000-square-foot building on the city's west side.

The district has closed dozens of aging and underused schools over the past few years.

A new, $21.8 million school for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will open later this year on the Mackenzie campus.

The district says it is one of three schools completed in time for the start of the 2012-13 academic year. The work is part of a $500.5 million capital improvement program.
