EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) -

Firefighters spent two and a half hours at an Edina home on Wednesday morning, working to free a worker who was trapped under a slab of concrete in a 6-ft. hole.

The man was stuck since a little before 8 a.m. Wednesday until 10:15 a.m.

The worker was pinned face-down in the dirt under a 2x2 ft. concrete slab that covered his lower half. He was in pain, and was administered medicine at the scene, but was conscious and talking throughout the rescue.

The patient thanked the team effort from the Edina Fire Department, Hennepin EMS, and everyone else involved in the extrication, saying, "They did a top-notch job and made me comfortable throughout the rescue. They were absolutely professional."

More than 60 firefighters from eight metro departments assisted the highly-specialized Edina Urban Search and Rescue Team.

The patient has since been treated and released from Hennepin County Medical Center.

The man was doing foundation work on the home off Paddock Road when the concrete slab fell and pinned him. He was trapped in a very small area where crews had been hand-digging dirt and concrete while trenching around the foundation to build a drain tile.

"This is very back-breaking work," said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. "They're literally in a hole, digging out dirt by hand with very small shovels, trying to get it out. It's a very hot day and our crews are being stressed and suffering a little bit of heat exhaustion as well."

Inspectors from the Minnesota OSHA were also on the scene, but the database shows no past safety violations or investigations against the contractor involved during the past five years.
