A 9-week-old puppy was badly hurt after being tossed out of a moving vehicle in Gwinnett County on Tuesday morning, and since then, there's been a flood of generosity from people who want to help.
The puppy's story began on a two-lane road in Lilburn around 7 a.m. Jennifer Hayes tells FOX 5 she got a text message from her husband telling her a puppy had been thrown from a moving car. As he was put outside the car, another car coming from the opposite direction hit him. The driver of that car stopped, and brought the animal straight to a local vet.
An x-ray showed his right hind foot was hanging by a thread. He'll need surgery to fix it.
Veterinary technician Mary Rue calls the puppy Spunky because of his fighting spirit. It's a spirit he'll need to recover after suffering a seriously broken leg.
Hayes, who is active in animal rescue, says she decided to take responsibility for the puppy's care. She posted a request on her Facebook page for help from her friends, and she says they've quickly responded.
If surgery doesn't work, Spunky's leg will have to be amputated. But Rue says she's optimistic because he's clearly a fighter. For now, the puppy known as Spunky is enjoying the protection and care of Hayes' family.
