One more thing about getting a human on the phone

Posted: Updated:

One more thing, about that frustrating game we all play on the phone called, "Try to get a human." It's getting harder and harder. But there are now a couple of web sites to the rescue, and you should definitely bookmark them.

GetHuman boasts that companies have more phone numbers and contact options than ever. And they show you how to get through fastest. Multiple phone numbers are listed here for many large companies, along with tips on how to reach a human. There are also customer service reviews, and they list alternate company numbers that aren't call centers.

DialAHuman lists companies in alphabetical order along with their phone numbers and dial a human directions. The experts say if nothing else works don't punch anything. That confuses the computerized system and you'll get transferred to an operator. If the system accepts voice prompts try talking jibberish. When the automation can't identify what you're saying it'll give up and you'll probably be forwarded to a real person.

I love it when you're asked to punch in a long number that's supposed to identify you, and then when you finally get a human they ask you for the same thing. Or you go through a half dozen prompts, wait on hold, and then you finally get a recording that says, "Sorry, the office is closed."

Press one if you're ready to smash the phone against a wall. Sometimes technological progress actually moves us backwards. But remember, your call is important to them.
