NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Four drivers have been charged in a May 19 school bus crash in Newton County that injured 61 people, the Georgia State Patrol announced.

Six buses containing students and chaperones from Burke County Middle School were headed to Six Flags Over Georgia when the crash occurred on Interstate 20 just west of Ga. Highway 11.

GSP Sgt. Matt Gunnin said that as the buses approached a construction zone, the first one in line began braking, which caused the second bus to hit the first.

"The third and fourth buses moved to the right lane in an attempt to avoid the collision but the fourth bus was hit in the rear by the fifth bus which caused the fourth to hit the third in the rear.  The fifth bus continued forward and struck the second bus in the rear.  The fifth bus was then hit from behind by the sixth bus and the passenger car struck the rear of the sixth bus," said Gunnin.

Police charged four drivers with following too closely, which is a misdemeanor. The drivers charged are Betty Harrison Dukes, 48, Angela Benjamin Anthony, 44, Stephanie D. Pierce, 37. Latarsha Moneek, the driver of the passenger car, is also charged.

Most of those injured were treated and released on the same day as the crash. Anthony, the person most seriously injured, has seen been released from Grady Memorial Hospital, according to police.
