DETROIT (WJBK) -
"The cars were so mangled up and everything, so I really didn't want to see too much of it," said Bertha McCann.
A trip down Vernor for one family quickly turned into a trip to the nearest hospital. A car carrying four young kids was T-boned by a driver who allegedly blew a stop sign at Bewick.
"He hit us and knocked us over to the other side of the street," said accident victim Joshua Harris.
The sheer impact of the crash dug out an inch gash into Vernor. It also knocked down a some poles. Witnesses told us the road was shut down for about an hour while crews worked to clear the mess up.
"A bad thing, especially when you hear a child hollering and screaming. It seemed like it was a young child. And then I could hear a woman screaming, too, saying, 'Get me out of here. Please help me,'" McCann said.
We're told that kids ages five months to four years old were all pulled from the car relatively easily while two of the adults actually had to be cut out. In all, seven people were inside the smashed up car. All of them are expected to be okay.
"The suspect, actually he began to help get the children out of the car. I don't think he was trying to run off or anything. He was probably just as much shook up as everybody was in the situation," said Donald Harris.
According to police, that driver was tracked down a couple blocks away, and the accident scene eventually cleared away. Still, what happened there won't be easily forgotten.
"The way that she was screaming, I know she was in a lot of pain, and I just hope it wasn't a serious thing. I hope she [makes] it through," said McCann.
